BN is usually black, brown, or dark red crystals, with a sphalerite structure and good thermal conductivity .Its hardness is second only to that of diamond. It is a super-hard material and is commonly used as a tool material and abrasive.[3]

Boron nitride has the property of resisting chemical erosion and is not eroded by inorganic acids and water. The boron-nitrogen bond is broken in hot, concentrated alkali. It begins to oxidize in the air at temperatures above 1200℃. Decomposition begins at approximately 2700℃ under vacuum .Slightly soluble in hot acid, insoluble in cold water, with a relative density of 2.29. When boiled with water, the hydrolysis is very slow, generating a small amount of boric acid and ammonia .It does not react with weak acids or strong bases at room temperature, is slightly soluble in hot acids, and can only be decomposed by treatment with molten potassium hydroxide. Chlorine gas can only react with it under red-hot conditions.[8] The compressive strength is 170MPa.The maximum operating temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere is 900℃, while it can reach 2800℃ in an inactive reducing atmosphere. However, its lubrication performance is relatively poor at normal temperature. Most of the properties of boron nitride are superior to those of carbon materials. For hexagonal boron nitrid,: it has a very low coefficient of friction, excellent high-temperature stability, good thermal shock resistance, very high strength, very high thermal conductivity, relatively low coefficient of expansion, very high resistivity, corrosion resistance, and can transmit microwaves or infrared rays.

Material structure

Boron nitride crystals in the hexagonal crystal system, most commonly in the graphite lattice, and there are also amorphous variants. Besides the hexagonal crystal form, boron nitride has other crystal forms, including: rhombic boron nitride (r-BN), cubic boron nitride (c-BN), and wurtzite type boron nitride (w-BN).People have even discovered two-dimensional boron nitride crystals like graphene.
